Angel & baby Jesus bento by bentoriffic

So maybe this isn’t the most reverent representation of the manger scene, but I was limited on time this morning.  I wanted Miss G to have the manger scene for her lunch…the reason for the season.  Baby Jesus is made from Stretch Island fruit leather on a bed of cashews.  The angel is Justin’s Almond Butter on Rudi’s Organic brand Whole Grain bread.  The star is a dried apricot and next to the angel are a Christmas tree pick of grape tomatoes.  At the top left are organic blueberries with a gift food pick and in the top right compartment of her Easy Lunchboxes container are organic raspberries.

And above is the elusive mom lunch.  I say this because I rarely get lunch.  I’m lucky if I have a protein bar or smoothie while on the run.  Today I am driving down to Miss G’s school to have lunch with her so I packed myself a cute lunch too.  I’m having a gingerbread girl on Rudi’s Organic whole grain bread with almond butter & blackberry jam.  I stuck some raisin buttons on with almond butter.  She has cinnamon candy eyes and a fruit leather mouth.  I used a Hello Kitty bow for her hair pick.  She is surrounded by grape tomatoes on Christmas tree picks.  In the top left compartment are pineapple chunks with a candy cane food pick and the top right has organic blueberries and raspberries.  Merry Christmas to you all!

I will be taking a break to spend time with my family while the kids are out of school.  Hoping everyone has some time to relax and appreciate all the little things in life.  I look forward to hearing from you in the new year!

Much Love, Sarah

Mom’s had her hands in the Play Doh collection again.  I found a mini Cinderella crown cutter in the Play Doh stash so I’ve scoured it off and I’m using it for lunches now.  Miss G has a princess sandwich today cut with a LunchPunch sandwich cutter.  She has yellow and red grape tomatoes surrounding the sandwich.  At the top left are crown shaped cantaloupe pieces with a princess wand pick and at the top right are kiwi slices with a tiara on top packed in her Easy LunchBoxes container.

For her snack today, my 4 year old has a Happy Tiffin stainless bento filled with sliced mangos, a peeled clementine, 2 Crimson Gold tiny apples and whole cashews.

My 2 year old had leftovers from last night.  She had plums, carambola (star fruit) spaghetti squash with marinara sauce topped with dairy free parmesan and pineapple chunks packed in her LunchBots Quad stainless lunch container.

Happy lunch packing!

Things I used to make this lunch:

I am excited to share the new CuteZCute cutter with my readers!  One lucky reader will win a CuteZCute kit of their own.  This contest is open to readers worldwide.  This tool takes the guesswork and time out of detailed cute lunches.  I was given a kit to try out and review.  I have received no other compensation for this review.

The CuteZCute Food Deco Cutter kit comes with 6 pieces.  There is a face frame for the template, 4 animal feature cutters including a panda, frog, pig and cat and a great pick for poking out small pieces from the templates.  My favorite feature aside from the awesome possibilities and ease of use is that each facial cutter has a side for cutting through on one side and for simply imprinting on the other which takes the guess work out of hoping you don’t ruin a bunch of bread.  Many cutters also come with intricate designs but don’t offer a way of getting the pieces out without ruining what you’ve cut.  This Panda Assistant poker makes it very simple to get out the eye, ear, nose and mouth pieces without poking small holes in what you’ve cut.

This panda lunch was the first lunch I made with the CuteZCute cutter for a lunch.  I used whole wheat bread and cut the face features from Stretch Island fruit leather strips.  For each creation, you simply cut the face shape from whatever you’re using.  I’ve seen pizzas, rice, cookies, english muffins, bread, tortillas cheese and you could even use pie dough for individual pies.

I also did this almond butter and jam pig lunch with the cutter.  I can tell you after a couple of years hand cutting shapes, this kit is a dream.  I spend about 10 minutes tops making the lunches with the CuteZCute.

The above frog quesadilla was made with green tortillas and Daiya brand non-dairy cheese shreds.  The frog is on a Wholly Guacamole lily pad.  From start to finish this took me less than 10 minutes.

Some examples of the different faces you can make with the cutter are below.

My blogging friend also has a link up party on her blog of dozens of cute ideas for the different uses of all the possibilities with these cutters.  Click below to see all the fun CuteZCute lunches:

Lunch With Eyeness CuteZCute Ideas

I decided to come up with a few holiday ideas for the CuteZCute on my own just to show how quick and easy it can be to have fun.

Now that Halloween’s over, there are still fall festivals happening so I thought a scarecrows would be fun.  I used the face template for the face.  I hand cut the hat and used the bread crust scraps to make hair.  The facial features are the frog eye cutter made from fruit leather. I used the pig ear cutter on a mini carrot slice for the scarecrow’s nose, the pig’s eyes are the cheeks made from apple skin, and the frog’s mouth cutter is the scarecrow’s mouth from fruit leather.  I used 2 pretzel rods for the scarecrow’s arms.

I made a reindeer out of pumpernickel bread and the face template.  The eyes and nose were the panda bear’s eye cutters.  The reindeer eyes are the bread scraps from the scarecrow as is the reindeer’s mouth made from the panda mouth cutter.  The red nose is also using the panda bear’s eye cutter used to cut a small piece of apple.   I used the bread scraps and the panda mouth cutter to make the antlers for the reindeer.

Since we’re my 1 year anniversary as a blog, I want to thank my friends and fans for all their support.  I love you toast with fresh fruit for breakfast anyone?  The small heart flowers are cantaloupe and watermelon.   The heart in the middle of the toast is fruit leather.  I used both the FunBites Luv It and Cube It cutters for the meal below.

More heart flowers for lunch using FunBites Luv It cutter.  At top left is chickpea hummus with a clover pick, at the top right are watermelon hearts.  The bottom part of the Easy Lunch Box has crackers for dipping in the hummus, next to the crackers are mango hearts, at bottom right are cantaloupe hearts and the bottom left has a sandwich topped with soy cheese hearts.

And a baby carriage sandwich today with a baby panda to celebrate my sister and her husband’s new arrival today!  A sandwich made from both the FunBites Luv It and Cube It cutters.  At the top left are pineapple and cantaloupe cubes and at the top right are pear cubes both cut with the Cube It FunBites cutter.  The baby carriage sandwich is an almond butter and jam on whole grain bread cut from the FunBites Luv It cutter .  The small hearts at the top are dried apricots.  The baby lunch is also packed in an Easy Lunch Box.

This contest will go through midnight on Friday, June 8th, 2012.  I will choose a winner by random.org and contact you.  You will have 48 hours to respond, or I will choose a new winner.

Back to school again today.  I feel like Sunday nights always sneak up and slap me in the face around 9pm when I realize all that I have to do for the following morning.  I wasn’t taking requests today so Miss G gets some square packages that I turned into a lunch “present”.  Her sandwiches are Justin’s Almond butter and strawberry whole fruit spread on Ezekiel Low Sodium bread.  I made my ribbon out of soy cheese and put a bow pick in the top to keep the two squares together.  At the top left is a pile of fresh blueberies from King Family Farm and Market that we visit weekly with a bunny pick and bunny baran (food separator) in the back for decoration.  At the top right are grape tomatoes and a blue monkey pick, and at the bottom right are watermelon squares packed in her Hello Kitty Sanrio bento box.

Miss A has the same sandwich on Ezekiel bread with Justin’s almond butter & fruit spread.  She has a pair of soy cheese shades and a fruit leather smile on her “cool” face today. To the left of the face is a small square of dried cherries and apricots.  At the top left are sliced pears with a pink bunny baran, the top right are watermelon squares and the bottom right is a small container of cashews packed in her pink Hello Kitty Sanrio bento box.  Both girls have ice water in their CamelBak kids bottles.

My husband is having black beans and rice with veggies not pictured here.  To go along with his main lunch, I packed him a salad of mixed baby greens.  On top are sliced baby cucumbers, red grape tomatoes and a mini sweet red pepper cut in half, seeded & shaped into hearts.  At the top right are heart shaped strawberries and at the bottom right are carrot & celery sticks packed in his Easy Lunch Box.

So I know this isn’t a bento post, but it’s still cute food so I guess I can pass it off.  Last weekend we threw a Pinkalicious birthday party  at the community swimming pool for our 4 year old..  As one of my neighbors said, I “went bento” on the fruit.  It was a fun party once it started, but my note to self is that I shouldn’t have taken most of the preparation on by myself.  I thought the project was manageable until I found myself cutting fruit hearts at 1:30 am the night before the party, and then I realized I must be crazy to think I could do it all alone.  Of course, I owe some credit to the idea which I found on Pinterest.

and a great watermelon on a stick idea from my blogger friend Keeley McGuire Blog

Here’s what I came up with:

GRAPE SKEWERS

HEART SHAPED MELON SKEWERS (HONEYDEW, CANTALOPE AND WATERMELON)

MORE SKEWERS OF HONEYDEW & STRAWBERRIES

AND WATERMELON HEARTS ON POPSICLE STICKS.  IDEA COURTESY OF KEELEY MCGUIRE BLOG.   THANKS AGAIN, KEELEY!  THE WATERMELON DIDN’T STAY ON THE SMALL WOODEN SKEWERS AS WELL AS I HAD HOPED SO I REMEMBERED HER POPSICLE STICK IDEA & VOILA!  PROBLEM SOLVED.

MY FRIEND LIGA AT LIGA’S SWEET CREATIONS MADE THE PINKALICIOUS CUPCAKES FROM SCRATCH & HAND DECORATED THEM ALL.  SHE EVEN MADE FONDANT CHERRIES SINCE I DIDN’T WANT ALL THE FOOD DYE FROM THE MARACHINO CHERRIES.  SHE USED ALL ORGANIC INGREDIENTS AND FOOD BASED, NATURAL FOOD DYES.  SHE IS AMAZING.  THE CUPCAKES WERE THE ONLY THING THAT WEREN’T VEGAN, BUT THEY WERE INCREDIBLE!

I was determined to keep the party as healthy as possible but still fun for the kids.  I had 3 trays of skewers and about 20 kids there.  There were only 7 skewers left at the end of the party!  I was so glad I spent all that time cutting those hearts when I knew my friends’ kids were all going home not filled with junk.  There was also a basket of clementine oranges and pretzels with hummus.  I wanted to use natural food dye to make the hummus pink, but I decided against my plan so that I could do the individual hummus packs & keep them cool.  It was about 87 degrees here on Saturday which is always tricky keeping fresh fruit and other foods safe AND fresh.  We had organic tea, raspberry lemonade and ice waters for everyone to drink.

Again, because the party was outside, I kept decorations pretty simple but VERY pink.  We had pink tissue paper flowers, hot pink lanterns, pink baskets for all the Pinkalicious plates, cups & napkins and I was able to use some of my spring pink baskets that I have to put things in.  I bought two glass vases from the dollar store, filled them with pink Peeps (not for eating), shredded pink recycled paper on top and used them to hold some of the party favors for the girls which doubled as the centerpieces.  They had pink and purple flower wands in one and pearl wands or pinwheels for the smaller siblings who attended.

The treat bags that went home had some Pinkalicious stickers & temporary tattoos for the girls and prince/knight themed ones for the boys.  Each child also got a cookie cutter of a crown, a unicorn (for Goldilicious, Pinkalicious’ imaginary unicorn friend) or a frog for the boys.  It was tough to figure the boy part out, but they all had fun.

A big thanks to all Miss G’s friends who were there, and we missed all those who couldn’t make it.  Happy Friday!
