Angel & baby Jesus bento by bentoriffic

So maybe this isn’t the most reverent representation of the manger scene, but I was limited on time this morning.  I wanted Miss G to have the manger scene for her lunch…the reason for the season.  Baby Jesus is made from Stretch Island fruit leather on a bed of cashews.  The angel is Justin’s Almond Butter on Rudi’s Organic brand Whole Grain bread.  The star is a dried apricot and next to the angel are a Christmas tree pick of grape tomatoes.  At the top left are organic blueberries with a gift food pick and in the top right compartment of her Easy Lunchboxes container are organic raspberries.

And above is the elusive mom lunch.  I say this because I rarely get lunch.  I’m lucky if I have a protein bar or smoothie while on the run.  Today I am driving down to Miss G’s school to have lunch with her so I packed myself a cute lunch too.  I’m having a gingerbread girl on Rudi’s Organic whole grain bread with almond butter & blackberry jam.  I stuck some raisin buttons on with almond butter.  She has cinnamon candy eyes and a fruit leather mouth.  I used a Hello Kitty bow for her hair pick.  She is surrounded by grape tomatoes on Christmas tree picks.  In the top left compartment are pineapple chunks with a candy cane food pick and the top right has organic blueberries and raspberries.  Merry Christmas to you all!

I will be taking a break to spend time with my family while the kids are out of school.  Hoping everyone has some time to relax and appreciate all the little things in life.  I look forward to hearing from you in the new year!

Much Love, Sarah

Anything that gives me a few more minutes is something I can buy into.  As a busy mom with 2 toddlers, I don’t want to sacrifice the important stuff like healthy ingredients.   I’ve been trying to make more foods that are healthy, with variety and less effort on my part.  Lazy?  I hope not.  My kids wanted a snack.  I thought I’d see what I could make that could normally be cooked but could also be eaten as is in a situation like a tropical storm where you lose power in your house.

I rinsed a package of cannellini beans and smashed them with a fork in a bowl.  I added 2 tablespoons of mild salsa and 1 tablespoon of Tofutti sour cream and mixed them into the beans.  I put a dollop of each on pita chips that I had, sprinkled them with a few Daiya (dairy-free) cheese shreds and topped with an olive slice.  I broiled mine for a few minutes until the cheese melted.  They were yummy!  My chips were very thin to begin with and got a bit mushy.  I would recommend toasted bread slices or thicker pita chips.  They were all gone quickly!  Protein packed and fast to fix.

Nacho served with puzzle piece sandwiches and orange slices.

Little Miss 4 year old is off to school again today.  She has a butterfly bowl of vegetable bean soup with a piece of vegan butterfly cheese on top for decoration.

And to go with her soup is a LunchBots Uno with grape tomatoes, homemade butterfly shaped vegan cornbread muffins, blackberries and blueberries with a papaya butterfly on top, cashews, dried cranberries and dried mango strips.

Miss G’s first day in pre-Kindergarten was yesterday.  I definitely had a proud mom moment realizing she was excited to go and well socialized enough to look at the positives of new friends and a fun new classroom.  I also had my sad moment where I felt like I was saying goodbye to my oldest baby.  She is definitely all girl now and ready to go out & meet new friends.  It’s hard to let go sometimes.  After all, it seems like only months ago when I was staring down at a new baby wondering, “What do I DO with her?”.  There is no manual.   As parents, we just do our best one day at a time.  Off to school she goes.

She will be in school until mid-afternoon which means she needs lunch AND snacks daily that I pack for her.  She wanted her trusty almond butter and jam today, but I told her we’re working on more variety from now on.  For today, the apple sandwiches are on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread with Justin’s Maple Almond butter and strawberry jam.  Along with the sandwiches are an apple pick of red seedless grapes, a silicone apple container with small Apple Cinnamon Larabar bites (I cut them into small pieces) and grape tomatoes.  She also LOVES Israeli cous cous (top left) so I mixed it with quinoa and edamame which were cooked in vegetable broth.  At the top right are blackberries and raspberries packed in her Easy LunchBox container.

For her snack I used a small 2 tiered bento box. The top compartment is mini carrots and sugar snap peas.  In the green sauce container is Tofutti sour cream for dipping and below that is a mini vegan apple cinnamon muffin.  At the bottom are dried cranberries on the left and the right has sprouted pumpkin seeds and cashews.

The hubby has a salad again.  His mixed baby greens are arugula, tat soi, baby green and red chard, and baby bok choi.  On top is a piece of teriyaki marinaded tofu, a yellow roma tomato, a green heirloom tomato and sprouted pumpkin seeds on the sides.  At the top left are blueberries and raspberries and the top right is a wild rice salad with red & green peppers and pecans packed in his Easy LunchBox container.

Wishing all of my readers’ families a smooth transition during this back to school time!

Hi everyone!! I’m Michelle from Creative Food(creative-food.blogspot.com).  I’m so happy to be here on Bentoriffic! I am such a fan and am always in awe of what Sarah creates for her little girls Miss G and Miss A. I am such a fan of Sarah and her food artwork. She is incredible! Even though I haven’t met her in person (yet!) I am happy to call her my friend 🙂 So here I am honored to guest post on her amazing blog!

My blog, Creative Food( creative-food.blogspot.com), is a collection of snacks and lunches that my daughter Eliana and I make together in the kitchen.  I started making creative food because she would literally live off of bread alone if it were up to her.  So I began to present fruits and vegetables in a fun and creative way to encourage her to eat better, which has worked tremendously! It is fun creative outlet for me, and she loves it (win, win!)  We also found out this year that Eliana is allergic to peanuts, cashews and pistachios, so most of the meals (with a few exceptions) are peanut free and nut free.

So without further ado..I made this cute Frog bento in an EasyLunchBox with Eliana last week:

This lunch was very simple, quick to put together and she loved it! 🙂

The frog is a ham and cheese sandwich on a spinach tortilla cut with a frog cookie cutter.  I added edible candy eyes and used a food safe marker to draw a mouth. The lily pad is sliced cucumber. The “water” is white cilantro lime rice dyed blue. (I took some leftover rice, put it in a bowl and mixed in two small drops of blue food dye.) I added some goldfish crackers for added cuteness 🙂 The fly is a raisin with sunflower kernel wings (you can easily put almond slices as wings instead. For example see my spider lunch (http://www.creative-food.blogspot.com/2012/06/very-busy-spider-lunch.html) Eliana isn’t allergic to almonds but has now decided she will not eat them either because they are a nut).

In the upper right Eliana had some “flies on a log” (raisins, sunflower kernels wings, and I.M. Healthy Creamy Honey Soynut Butter on celery. Chocolate sprinkles were used to show the path of the fly).

In the bottom right she has a fruit salad or blueberries and strawberries in a frog silicone cup.  Eliana wanted to add the cute frog pick to finish the lunch!

This really was a simple to do and Eliana loved it and ate it all up. That always makes me happy and keeps me making Creative Food 🙂

Thank you to Sarah for inviting me to share this bento as a guest post on Bentoriffic!  I hope you have a wonderful day!! 🙂

Since we’re my 1 year anniversary as a blog, I want to thank my friends and fans for all their support.  I love you toast with fresh fruit for breakfast anyone?  The small heart flowers are cantaloupe and watermelon.   The heart in the middle of the toast is fruit leather.  I used both the FunBites Luv It and Cube It cutters for the meal below.

More heart flowers for lunch using FunBites Luv It cutter.  At top left is chickpea hummus with a clover pick, at the top right are watermelon hearts.  The bottom part of the Easy Lunch Box has crackers for dipping in the hummus, next to the crackers are mango hearts, at bottom right are cantaloupe hearts and the bottom left has a sandwich topped with soy cheese hearts.

And a baby carriage sandwich today with a baby panda to celebrate my sister and her husband’s new arrival today!  A sandwich made from both the FunBites Luv It and Cube It cutters.  At the top left are pineapple and cantaloupe cubes and at the top right are pear cubes both cut with the Cube It FunBites cutter.  The baby carriage sandwich is an almond butter and jam on whole grain bread cut from the FunBites Luv It cutter .  The small hearts at the top are dried apricots.  The baby lunch is also packed in an Easy Lunch Box.

This contest will go through midnight on Friday, June 8th, 2012.  I will choose a winner by random.org and contact you.  You will have 48 hours to respond, or I will choose a new winner.

My lovely blogger ladies decided that it would be fun to give dads and/or little ones a chance to pitch in for lunch and give us a hand for a day!  What a great idea!  So please make sure to push the button at the end of each post to see what everyone’s families did to help mom out for Mother’s Day!

My little Miss G is 4.  She ALWAYS wants to help.  I do love for her to help me, but most of the time the help she wants to give is in the morning rush to finish breakfast, making lunches & run out to school.  This morning I started her early so she could choose all the things for her own lunch.  She chose the ice cream cone shaped LunchPunch for her favorite sandwich shape out of the hundreds of cutters that we have.  She also said she wanted LOTS of pink since it is her favorite color.

She filled her smaller compartments in her Easy Lunch Box with 2 pink silicone cups , cut her sandwich shapes out of the loaf of Rudi’s Whole Grain organic bread and asked for her favorite standard, Justin’s Almond Butter & raspberry jam.  She was surprised that it was tough to spread the almond butter without ripping the bread.

I let her choose which fruits & vegetables she wanted.  She chose the picks and put it all together by herself.  She said she wanted a lot of pink sprinkles, and I told her she could just for today.  She even knew that she needed honey (agave nectar) to make them stick.  I had to laugh.  I think I’m so special at this, but she has been watching me so intently that the lunch looked an awful lot like something I would have done myself (minus the loads of sprinkles and too much food) and just a tad bit messier than me.

Finishing up:

She wanted to choose the background paper herself for the official picture, and insisted that she also take the photo of her lunch too.  She included watermelon, honeydew melon, mini carrots and threw in cashews and dried cherries in the green cup at the end. She also chose a Hello Kitty pick and a pink racoon pick to add in the end.

Here is her photo which I only cropped:

And here’s the photo I took of her.  I’m not including her beautiful, proud face, but know that she has a HUGE smile from doing this all by her 4 year old self!

Please hop over to Ludicrous Mama’s page called Biting The Hand That Feeds You to see what her munchkin did for her lunch!

I used random.org to choose my winner for the Mother’s Day FunBites giveaway.  Thank you again to FunBites for their generosity!

Here’s what Random.org chose:

Gemma, you are my winner!

You have 48 hours to confirm your information with me, at bentoriffic@gmail.com.  If I don’t hear from you by then, I will choose a new winner.  Wishing everyone a relaxing Mother’s Day weekend!

Thank you as always for stopping by!
