It’s spring break week here in Florida so the girls are eating at home.  It’s incredibly warm here again too so it feels like spring too.  Miss G is definitely in a girly girl phase.  Everything must be princesses, pink, flowery and fancy.  I went with butterflies for today’s theme.  In the yellow butterfly cup is leftover cannellini bruschetta with rice vinegar, fresh basil from the garden, mini heirloom and grape tomatoes from the local market mixed with salt & pepper.  It’s great on bread but awesome without it too.  At top right on the plate are heart-shaped strawberries, below that is a small black plum cut into a butterfly shape with pick antennae.  Her sandwich is a whole grain bread butterfly with almond butter and agave nectar.  On top are peeled plum slices on the wings and another slice of black plum for the body and more colored picks for antennae.

Little A had a flower themed lunch today.   Since she turned 2 it’s pretty much anyone’s guess as to whether she’ll devour the whole lunch or smile and chuck it all on the floor.  Today she went with option C which was to push the food around on her plate a bit, make a pattern in the applesauce and then proclaim that she’s “all done”.   I try.  Her sandwich is a whole grain flower with almond butter and agave with a blueberry on top and a snap pea crisp for the stem.  The yellow flower cup has cinnamon applesauce and a grape in it.  Below that are sections of black plum in a flower shape and next to that are a couple of strawberry flowers.

Miss G chose to be Kai Lan last year for Halloween, and she still loves to watch her.  Ni Hao Kai Lan is a little Chinese cartoon on Nick Jr.  She teaches little kids words in Mandarin Chinese.   I admit that I woke up a little earlier today to work on this one to surprise her. I made an oval for Kai Lan’s face and cut a circle in half for her ears.  Her hair is all hand cut raspberry fruit leather as are the eyelashes.  The eyes, eyebrows, nose & mouth are cut with a small oval cutter .  The whites of her eyes (yellows) are gruyere cheese.  I cut dried apricot flowers for her hair bows and secured them with 1/2 toothpicks underneath.  I did the same with the eyes and split one of them doing it 😦  The Ni Hao (“hi” in Mandarin Chinese) was also cut with my alphabet cutters using dried apricots.  My husband got the outer parts of the apricots in his lunch!

To go along with the sandwich, I included flower shaped strawberries, mini carrots, cashews and a Clif Kid organic fruit twist for a treat.  Not shown are an applesauce pouch, Lifeway Kefir pouch and an ice water.   Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Miss G requested a fish this morning so I used the template from http://funkylunch.com/gallery.htm.  The cookbook that he has is great because it is simple and uses ingredients that most people have already in their refrigerators.  I made a sandwich and then sliced a large carrot with a mandoline and cut the slices to fit.  The eye is the premade royal icing eye and the smile is made from fruit leather.  Underneath the fish are heart shaped green crisps from the asian food store, and the bottom portion is red, seedless grapes and blueberries.

Little Miss A went for her second day today.  Her lunch was leftover Annie’s Organic Macaroni Shells with edamame topped with a cheese cat and fruit leather face.  She also had sliced blueberries, red, seedless grapes in a silicone cat cup and the same green crisps.  She also had a Lifeway kefir pouch and a GoGo squeez applesauce pouch.

The kids and I walked to the park last night after dinner, and we saw an alligator sunning itself on the bank.   The girls were thrilled to see it, and I was definitely not.  Miss G talked about it all night, and asked me to make her sandwich a GIANT alligator like the one we saw.

I tried crinkle cutting some cheese for the teeth, but it didn’t really look right so I cut a bunch of awkward triangles & just stuck them in the sides.  He looks like he needs a good orthodontist 🙂  I crinkle cut the carrot sticks & included applesauce and Kefir with her lunch.  The eyes are royal icing that I bought on line.
