We’re back from a fun, long weekend away.  I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and a safe 4th!  I can’t say I planned well for lunches today since I was feeling especially sleepy this morning.  The girls are off to a week of summer camp at their regular school, and the adults are back to the grind.

I got a new bear face sandwich cutter.  To be honest it was not what I expected.  Maybe that is because I haven’t learned how to use it properly yet (instructions in Japanese), and maybe I should have planned ahead.  In any case, Miss G gets to be the guinea pig on this one.  Whole grain bread, although it is the best FOR you does NOT make the best shapes and mold well in presses.  What I got was a bear with a bit of a skull fracture.  Oops!  It’s definitely not the prettiest lunch I’ve ever made, but I believe it’s important to show you that nothing’s ever perfect.  My daughter will still think it’s fun and like it even if his face is falling apart.  To salvage his face I stuck raisins in his eyes, almonds in his ears, a prune (which she really does love and eat) and dried goji berries in for the mouth.  The goji berries are a newer food to my girls.  I don’t expect them to eat it all, but they must TRY them.  The bread is Rudi’s brand Nut & Oat bread filled with almond butter & strawberry jam.  Above the bear at the top left are mini carrots & dip in the bear container.  At the top right are bear shaped watermelon pieces packed in her Easy Lunch Boxes container.

Miss A gets a simplified version with little bear sandwiches today.  She doesn’t do well with the bigger sandwiches so I made her 3 little bears.  Hers are also almond butter and jam on whole grain bread.  With the sandwiches are organic raspberries, a bear pick and bear baran (food separators) just for fun decoration.  On the left side of the bento box are mini carrots, bear shaped watermelon pieces and pineapple chunks with more fun bear picks.

My husband gets a baby spinach salad made into a funky food face.  Broccoli sprouts make up the hair, cherry tomatoes for the eyes, a sugar snap pea for the nose, a carrot for the mouth cut with a crinkle cutter and walnut ears.  I buried more walnuts and peas under the face for him to find while he’s eating.  At the top left are pineapple pieces and at the top right is leftover whole grain elbow macaroni with marinara sauce & veggy crumbles packed in his Easy Lunch Boxes container.

I am not posting for the rest of the week so I can spend time with my family for a long weekend.  Just wanted to wish everyone a happy and safe 4th!

Miss G had a large star made from Rudi’s Whole Grain bread and a pumpernickel star sandwich.  Next to that she has a star container of organic cherries.  At the top left is a homemade mini pumpkin spice muffin.  I cut a star out of the top and filled it with a small bit of vegan cream cheese.  At the top right are watermelon and cantaloupe stars packed in her Easy Lunch Box.

Little Miss A had her version of the same with stacked peek-a-boo star sandwiches.  Above the sandwich is the same homemade mini pumpkin spice muffin with a small star of vegan cream cheese in the top and a star of cherries. At the top left she has blueberries sprinkled with raw goji berries on top.  At the top right she has cantaloupe and watermelon stars packed in her Easy Lunch Box.

My husband got in on the festivities with as much flair as I could pull off in his salad.  His salad is baby kale & spinach topped with sunflower seeds, zucchini stars and cherry tomatoes.  At the top left is a black plum and at the top right is a homemade vegan cornbread muffin all packed in his Easy Lunch Box.

The girls were starving by the time we were ready for lunch today so I had to come up with something quick!  They often want Hello Kitty which you may be tired of seeing by now, but they always like it.

Miss G had a Hello Kitty face sandwich on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  She also had organic seedless green grapes, Hello Kitty shaped cantaloupe pieces and a small container of dried cranberries packed in her Sanrio brand Hello Kitty bento box.

Little Sis had the same thing just in different shapes.  She had Hello Kitty sitting down with the same Hello Kitty stamped cantaloupe, green grapes and Craisins packed in her Hello Kitty bento box too.

The sandwich cutters came from the local Sanrio store and are cookie cutters.  The small vegetable & fruit cutters with stamps I found on eBay in Japan along with the Hello Kitty bento picks.

My husband has another healthy salad for lunch today.  He has all baby greens (spinach, kale, arugula and radicchio) topped with an orange heirloom tomato sliced and star shaped carrot slices.  At the top left are grapes and pomegranate seeds sprinkled on top.  At the top right was last night’s dinner here.  It’s Einkorn rigatoni, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, and white wine vinegar mixed with sweet peas, grape and plum tomatoes sliced, garbanzo beans (chickpeas) and topped with a small bit of soy feta cheese.  All if it is packed in his Easy Lunch Box.

Today’s lunch was a quickie.  My kids were starving and not willing to wait for my usual lunch antics and photos before eating.  Sheesh!  After all, they are 2 & 4.  They have the patience of a gnat.  So I whipped out my latest fun tool to try out, and this is what I got.  4 hearts and a diamond sandwich pockets made from Rudi’s Whole Grain bread, Justin’s Almond Butter and jam.  The owls are “sitting” on 2 Snyder’s braided whole grain pretzel sticks.  There are 2 heart watermelon pieces and a bunch of seedless red grapes below.

I pressed them in my newest toy from Bento USA below.

My husband gets a baby green salad with swiss chard, arugula and spinach underneath.  On top are orange heirloom tomatoes slices, baby carrots, chopped celery, green onions and sugar snap peas packed in his Easy Lunch Box.  At the top left are watermelon chunks and at top right are Rainier cherries.

I ran out of creative steam last night so I decided to sleep on it.  I woke up a bit fresher this morning, and thought Pinwheels!  I haven’t done those in a long time.  I usually do a sloppy job of making them.  This time I didn’t put as much filling in them and loaded the girls up with other yummy things in their lunch.

Both of them have almond butter & jam on whole grain tortillas.  Miss G’s version has musical note picks in them to hold them together.  Below on the left are cashews and raisins, and on the bottom right are blueberry stuffed raspberries.  In the top compartments are a mini homemade vegan oatmeal muffin with a tree pick and carrot and celery sticks.

Make sure to ask schools or play places if they are peanut or nut-free before your bring your lunches there.  It could save a child’s life!  As a rule in our family, we don’t take peanut butter out in public just as a precaution.   We only eat it at home now.   We pack SunButter, almond butter and sometimes even a soy based butter.  There are lots of great options out there to explore that won’t endanger someone’s health.

Miss A’s version has the food she likes and will eat.  She has the same mini tortilla roll ups with flower picks.  Below that to the left she has picks of pineapple and blueberries and underneath those are sliced green grapes, at bottom right are cashews and a dried apricot flower.  In the top left compartment is a mini oatmeal muffin with a bee pick and at the top right are raspberries.   Both lunches are packed in Easy Lunch Boxes.

School’s almost over for us.  It’s hard to believe since the days drag, but the weeks fly.  This week is a continuation of Under The Sea theme.  Miss G requested a submarine.  I have to admit it would be one of the last things I ever would have come up with.  It was so creative that I agreed.

She has a Justin’s Almond Butter and jam on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  I used a rolling pin to flatten the bread before hand cutting the submarine.  It has fruit leather portholes.  She has a date whale with coconut flakes on top next to the boat.  At the top left are mango slices with a blowfish pick and at the top right are watermelon slices with a small sea turtle pick.

I didn’t feel like making 2 subs so Miss A got an octopus today.  Hers was cut from a biscuit cutter and then I used the biscuit cutter to cut “legs” out of the remaining bread.  His hat is a date roll with coconut flakes shaped into a hat.  The eyes are candy eyes stuck on with almond butter and so is the fruit leather mouth. At the top left is a mandarin orange with a dolphin pick, at top right are watermelon pieces with an octopus baran (food separator), and in the yellow oval are mango pieces with an octopus pick.

My husband has a salad & sides to go with his lunch today.  His salad is organic romaine lettuce, with a locally grown, sliced tomato courtesy of my generous neighbor (Thank you!), unsalted, raw walnuts, mini carrots and cauliflower.  At the top left are dried apricots and a date roll with coconut flakes and at the top right are watermelon slices.  All 3 lunches today are packed in Easy Lunch Boxes.

Happy Hump Day!  In addition to the letter X this week, the girls are also learning about flowers in school this week.

Miss G has 2 flower sandwiches on Ezekiel Low Sodium bread.  Above the flowers in the flower cup she has raspberries surrounding a cantaloupe flower.  At the top right are blueberries underneath a pear flower with a blueberry in the middle.  At the bottom right are sugar snap peas with a cup of brown and wild rice in a flower cup on top of them and a flower cup of cashews.

Miss A has 2 matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls, for lunch.  They are also on Ezekiel bread with fruit leather hair and faces. Underneath the dolls are sugar snap peas.  At the bottom left she has watermelon and cantaloupe flowers.  At the top left she has a cup of pineapples underneath blueberry stuffed raspberries.  I saw some of my other blogger friends doing this, and I thought it was so cute and clever!

My husband has a spinach salad today topped with a cucumber X and heirloom tomato slices.  At the top right is white bean bruschetta with tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic and red wine vinegar.  At the bottom right is a cup of mini carrots and a piece of purple cauliflower in the middle and blueberries around the cauliflower.  All 3 lunches today are packed in Easy Lunch Boxes.
