I ran out of creative steam last night so I decided to sleep on it.  I woke up a bit fresher this morning, and thought Pinwheels!  I haven’t done those in a long time.  I usually do a sloppy job of making them.  This time I didn’t put as much filling in them and loaded the girls up with other yummy things in their lunch.

Both of them have almond butter & jam on whole grain tortillas.  Miss G’s version has musical note picks in them to hold them together.  Below on the left are cashews and raisins, and on the bottom right are blueberry stuffed raspberries.  In the top compartments are a mini homemade vegan oatmeal muffin with a tree pick and carrot and celery sticks.

Make sure to ask schools or play places if they are peanut or nut-free before your bring your lunches there.  It could save a child’s life!  As a rule in our family, we don’t take peanut butter out in public just as a precaution.   We only eat it at home now.   We pack SunButter, almond butter and sometimes even a soy based butter.  There are lots of great options out there to explore that won’t endanger someone’s health.

Miss A’s version has the food she likes and will eat.  She has the same mini tortilla roll ups with flower picks.  Below that to the left she has picks of pineapple and blueberries and underneath those are sliced green grapes, at bottom right are cashews and a dried apricot flower.  In the top left compartment is a mini oatmeal muffin with a bee pick and at the top right are raspberries.   Both lunches are packed in Easy Lunch Boxes.

One lucky winner will win a boatload of lunch making goodies from my 1 year giveaway.

My girls are at home with me during they day so unless we have an outing, we’re not packing many bento-style lunches these days.  Miss G is under the weather with a fever so we’re on quarantine for a few days too until she’s well.

Today Miss A asked more more little sandwiches.  I have some great options from my sets that I got from Bento USA.  I used the flower cutter from this set for her little flower sandwiches.  Click on the picture for the link to their site.

Miss A had Tofurkey deli slices on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  I used zucchini for the white flowers and the leftover rind for the stems of the flowers.  From the top left are Way Better brand Simply Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips (they have chia seeds and quinoa in them!), watermelon flowers and a flower of guacamole for dipping on the right.

Miss Sicky has a flop of a lunch.  I really meant to take some time with the teapot, but the more I tried the worse it looked.  Sometimes the image in my head is much prettier than the lunch itself. The teapot sandwich is a Tofurkey deli slice sandwich on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  The top is a slice of Vegan brand cheese.  I stared with a food coloring marker, and it went down hill from there.  I ripped the teapot handle, and I had to cover up some messy polka dots with some bad-for-you heart sprinkles to salvage it.  At the top left are watermelon flowers and at the top right are zucchini flowers.  The best part with little kids is that they even love the failures.

For all the smaller flowers, I use the flower cutter from this set of small cutters that I have.  I get lots of questions about which tools I use the most so I’m trying to include photos and links to those products for those who are interested.  I love these cutters because they never rust, they’re very easy to clean, and you can use them for just about any food item you want to cut.  If you click on the photo, it will take you to Bento USA’s site for more bento accessories.

FunBites Giveaway

It’s spring break week here in Florida so the girls are eating at home.  It’s incredibly warm here again too so it feels like spring too.  Miss G is definitely in a girly girl phase.  Everything must be princesses, pink, flowery and fancy.  I went with butterflies for today’s theme.  In the yellow butterfly cup is leftover cannellini bruschetta with rice vinegar, fresh basil from the garden, mini heirloom and grape tomatoes from the local market mixed with salt & pepper.  It’s great on bread but awesome without it too.  At top right on the plate are heart-shaped strawberries, below that is a small black plum cut into a butterfly shape with pick antennae.  Her sandwich is a whole grain bread butterfly with almond butter and agave nectar.  On top are peeled plum slices on the wings and another slice of black plum for the body and more colored picks for antennae.

Little A had a flower themed lunch today.   Since she turned 2 it’s pretty much anyone’s guess as to whether she’ll devour the whole lunch or smile and chuck it all on the floor.  Today she went with option C which was to push the food around on her plate a bit, make a pattern in the applesauce and then proclaim that she’s “all done”.   I try.  Her sandwich is a whole grain flower with almond butter and agave with a blueberry on top and a snap pea crisp for the stem.  The yellow flower cup has cinnamon applesauce and a grape in it.  Below that are sections of black plum in a flower shape and next to that are a couple of strawberry flowers.

The girls are off to play this morning so mommy can get a few things accomplished this morning.  I decided last minute to have them stay through lunch.  Miss G gets a flower LunchPunch cut sandwich with almond butter & jam.  She has red grapefuit in the purple cup and a peeled & sliced kiwi in the pink cup.  The flower cutout has agave nectar in it and inside the heart container are Craisins all packed in her Easy Lunch Box.

Little Miss A has a smaller version.  Her is an almond butter & jam in whole grain bread made from the new LunchPunch set.  She got a little ice cream cone, agave nectar to stick sprinkles and fruit leather for the cone details which are SURE to fall off from all the shaking she does.  She insists on wearing her “pack pack” and RUNS with it on so I’m sure it doesn’t look cute by the time she eats hers. On the right are dried apricots, sliced strawberries and Craisins in the heart container packed in her LunchBots stainess Duo.  Both girls have ice water in kids CamelBak bottles with their lunch.

So this week is M week at the kids’ preschool.  Miss G is practicing writing her upper and lower case M, and both kids are learning about words and sounds that begin with M.  I decided to find something G loved with M so I chose Milli Measure from Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr.  She is made of whole wheat tortillas and fruit leather for her face & hair. Inside was faux turkey veggie slices and faux cheese.  I also added the M on her hat.  The pink sheep container is filled with sliced kiwi and next to it is a pick of pineapple slices and blueberries.  She also had a small container of corn chips and an ice water with her lunch.

Little A had a scalloped tortilla sandwich with the same faux turkey & cheese and a fruit leather dot on top.  Above that are snap pea crisps.  On the left are pineapple chunks and blueberries.  She also had an applesauce and ice water with her lunch.

Miss G is finally back to school this week after a long spell of being at home sick.  She wanted a leaf today so she got a maple leaf turkey & cheese sandwich with mini carrots below and a small piece of Halloween candy wedged in.  On the right are watermelon maple & oak leaves and a pick of pineapple and grapes.  She had an ice water & Lifeway berry kefir pouch to drink.

My littlest pumpkin had a small lunch today.  She hasn’t been eating much lunch in the past week.  She also got 2 flowers (turkey & cheese) with green snap peas, a cup of pineapple chunks and watermelon and leftover Annie’s macaroni (her favorite food).  She also had an ice water and a Lifeway flavored kefir with her lunch.
