This week is jungle week at preschool summer camp for the girls.  They are obsessed with monkeys already.  I happen to think it’s because they can relate to their behavior at 2 & 4.  They’re wild, they like to run around and make tons of noise, throw things, and thank goodness they’re cute…what’s not to like?

Miss G is having a monkey face.  I used a biscuit cutter for the top part of the head and a large oval (Easter egg) cutter for the mouth portion of the sandwich and trimmed the edges a bit.  Then I used a smaller circle cutter for the ears.  It’s all made from Rudi’s Honey Wheat bread and filled with Justin’s Almond butter and strawberry jam.   I used the almond butter to stick on the fruit leather mouth, nostrils and pupils.  The eyes are Vegan brand cheese.  The face is on 2 romaine leaves and there are halved prunes underneath to prop up the ears and mouth & keep them from falling.  I also included heart shaped strawberry halves.  At the top left are plum sections with a piece of monkey baran (food separators) and at top right are watermelon squares with another monkey packed in her Easy Lunch Box container.

Little A is having a monkey swinging from a broccolini tree.  I used a cookie cutter for this one and made the face from Stretch Island fruit leather.  I also cut “bananas” from pineapple chunks.  Miss G and I have a severe banana allergy so we can’t have the real thing in the house.  I hung the bananas in the tree along with a monkey pick. Underneath the monkey are crinkle cut sugar snap peas for the jungle floor packed in her Easy Lunch Box container.

My husband’s salad is very orangey today.  Orange foods are full of the antioxidant carotenoids which help reduce inflammation, enhance the immune system and are a great source of vitamin A for things like healthy skin and vision.  He has baby bok choi and other mixed baby greens.  On top are sliced orange bell peppers, Daiya vegan cheese shreds and carmelized walnuts around the sides.  At the top left are cashews underneath dried apricots.  At the top right are watermelon squares, a heart cut out of the middle is filled with pomegranate seeds packed in his Easy Lunch Box container.

Hope everyone has a great weekend planned.  Happy Friday!

I have a bento supply and accessory addiction.  It’s no secret to anyone who knows me well. Here is a photo of my recent orders from Bento USA by All Things For Sale.  In my opinion, they are probably the most complete and affordable resource for bento supplies that can be purchased on line.

In my most recent package, I had a gift from Bento USA by All Things For Sale to try out so I made little Miss A’s lunch with it.  She loves the smaller sandwiches I make for her.   They don’t last long!  These cute cutters are a rabbit, an elephant and a bear.  Her sandwiches are on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread with Tofurkey brand deli slices (vegan) and Vegan brand cheese.  In the pink bunny container are dried cranberries, in the middle are green grapes with an elephant pick and in the blue bear are blueberries.

Here are the cutters I used.  Please click on the photo to view more items at Bento USA by All Things For Sale.

And Miss G has a heart with a surprised face.  At the top left are green and red grapes and at the top right are honeydew melon chunks with face picks.

FunBites Giveaway

Both girls wanted Hello Kitty lunches for school today.  This will officially be their last bento lunch of this school year since tomorrow is a water day with lunch in the the classroom.  You never know how much you appreciate all that teachers do until you have your kids at home for a week straight with no curriculum planned!  Thank you to each and every teacher, aide and friend who touches my kids’ lives.  You are truly a gift!

Miss A has Hello Kitty face on Rudi’s whole grain bread.  The face, bow & whiskers are cut from Vegan brand cheese.  To the left are raspberries with a blueberry in the middle.  At the bottom left are watermelon pieces and at the bottom right is a giant strawberry heart with Hello Kitty picks of edamame on either side packed in her pink Sanrio brand Hello Kitty bento box.

Miss G has the same Hello Kitty face sandwich with a fruit leather face, bow & whiskers.  Above the sandwich are two Hello Kitty picks of edamame.  To the right of the sandwich is a giant strawberry heart and a Hello Kitty container above that with dried cranberries and cashews inside.  In the purple flower cup are raspberries with a Hello Kitty pick and at the top right are watermelon pieces in Hello Kitty’s face shapes.  The top piece has a bow pick and black sesame seeds for eyes and a nose.  Her lunch is packed in an Easy Lunch Box.

If I had kept up with the paperwork that comes home from school, I would have known about kite day earlier!  Instead, Miss G’s teacher was kind enough to remind me yesterday.  I had another transportation lunch planned, but I decided to reroute.  It’s actually the perfect idea because my little girls have been very into Mary Poppins lately so I was thinking about the song, “Let’s Go Fly A Kite”.    I did a FunBites giveaway a few weeks back, and I had a kite idea that I didn’t use. The two kites at the bottom were cut using the FunBites Luv It! cutter.

FunBites Luv It!

At the top left are pineapple chunks cut with the FunBites Luv It cutter and topped with a heart strawberry.  To the right is Sabra hummus in an orange flower cup.  The heart in the middle is a snow pea, on the KITE picks are edamame and below are mini carrots for dipping in the hummus.  The bottom 2 kite sandwiches are made on Rudi’s Nut & Oat bread cute with the FunBites Luv It! cutter which can be found through their site or on Amazon.  Both have almond cutter & strawberry jam inside.  The kite to the left is topped with Veggy brand soy cheese, and the clouds are also made from the same cheese.  The kite strings are made from black rice vermicelli.  Miss G’s lunch is pack in an Easy Lunch Box, and she has ice water with her lunch.  In keeping with our new diet, her whole lunch is plant-based and vegan.

Below are the other lunches I made with the same cutter.  The giveaway is over, but there will be another one coming up soon so please stay tuned!  FunBites Fun Food Ideas for Kids (and big kids)

The girls love Hello Kitty so I decided to do one more for fun.  Please visit the Bento Blog Network.  My bentos are #s 20 and #23.  Stop over there and check out all the awesome lunches people made, and you can vote for your favorites!

It’s still Q week at school so I decided to make her Queen Hello Kitty.  She’s made on whole wheat bread quished a bit with a rolling pin.  I used a LunchPunch for the crown but the cat and her bow are both cut by hand.  The jewels on the crown are edible Easter confetti made of potato starch.  I stuck everything on today with almond butter.  She has prune ovals for eyes, a dried cranberry for her nose and fruit leather strips for her whiskers.  Her wand is a pretzel stick with a gummy heart.  I try to make it a rule to not put candy or sweets in her bento any more, but I made an exception with this one leftover from her Valentine candy.  On the top right are raspberries and strawberries with a Q pick in them and below that is a Hello Kitty Easter container with walnuts, almonds and raisins in it.

Little A has Q week too at school.  She gets a simple queen with an oval face, candy eyes, dried apricot crown and a dried cranberry mouth. In her Hello Kitty container are raisins, dried apricot and mango pieces.  At the top right is a sliced strawberry and raspberries with a crown pick and walnuts in the kitty container below.

I had all the right intentions.  Last week was “P” week at the kids’ school.  I thought I’d be proactive and ask Miss G what she wanted for her “Q” lunch.  The only thing she could come up with was quail so it was decided.  All good if NEXT week wasn’t “Q” week, and this week is a review.  So much for planning!

So a quail it is on whole grain flat bread with a carrot leg,  almond butter & jam inside in a stainless LunchBots container.  The 3 baby quails following behind are watermelon chunks.  The pink bunny container has mini carrots, the orange sauce container has dip for the carrots and the pink muffin cup has raspberries, blueberries and a big strawberry.

Miss A has a heart shaped  flatbread sandwich with almond butter and jam. Underneath it in the squirrel cup are cashews.  On the left side are watermelon flowers and heart shaped strawberries below.  Both girls have ice water in their kids CamelBak water bottles.

After a week or so of elaborate lunches, the girls get something simple.  Mom is just plain tired!  They both had hummus cups with heart sprinkles in them for fun with braided whole grain pretzel sticks.  Miss G’s Easy Lunch Box has mango and plum skewers on the left, heart shaped strawberries and a clementine orange with a bunny pick.

Little Miss A had the same hummus cup with sliced strawberries in the pink cup and in the pink heart container are small plum and mango chunks.  Her lunch is in a Crocodile Creek sandwich container.  Both girls had ice water with their lunch.
