Peace dove lunch by bentoriffic

Miss G went off to school today with a peace dove for lunch.  Surrounding the sandwich are grape tomatoes and sugar snap peas halved on holiday lunch picks.  In the top right are organic raspberries and in the top right are pineapple pieces packed in her Easy LunchBoxes container.

For her snack today, she has a LunchBotsDuo packed with yellow grape tomatoes, dried apricots and carambola (star fruit) slices on the left and a dove cut out of her green apple on the right with a peeled clementine.

This lunch sort of reminds me of something I should do for Valentine’s day, but love for my kids is year round so I make a lot of heart themed lunches.  This one is Rudi’s Whole Grain bread made with my large heart pocket sandwich maker.  I used the heart picks to skewer all the surrounding yummies.  Mini tomatoes on either side and raspberries and blueberries are around the sandwich.  In the top left compartment are 2 Crimson Gold organic mini apples and in the top right are honeydew pieces with a fruit leather heart on top packed in her Easy Lunchboxes container.

My 2 year old has a short morning at preschool which includes an early lunch.  We were having issues with her filling up on the school snacks so I began bringing a few pieces of fruit each week to share with the class.  It turns out all the kids like it, and they’re all eating healthier.  Her lunch today is packed in a LunchBots Quad.  From the top left are almond butter mini hearts made with Rudi’s brand Whole Grain bread, blueberries, green pears and apple hearts and raspberries.  Both girls have ice water with their lunches.

Things I used to make this lunch:

My dad died last week.  Just as I was typing away about the things I was grateful for last week, I realize now that the small things, tiny things we think are so insignificant can sometimes be the most precious memories.  My dad was a gifted writer and storyteller.  He loved to write and shared that love with me.  My dad read my blog.  I think he appreciated that I was using my writing and creativity, making a hobby out of it and feeding my kids healthy food. I live 3400 miles from my family so I was not there for this holiday.  All my siblings were fortunate enough to be there.  He had been ill for a while, but it doesn’t make his passing any easier.   I did have the chance to talk to him to say hi, catch up for a minute and to tell him I loved him the day he died.  And for that I am truly grateful.  The conversation was nothing significant, but it is one I will always remember since it was our last.  Today, more than most, I am grateful for the time I had with my dad.  Life is fragile and fleeting so be sure to stop and appreciate all the gifts in your life, no matter how small they seem.

My 4 year old daughter had an Easy LunchBoxes container filled with angels.  From the top left are pear pieces and angel shaped pears.  In the top right compartment are honeydew angels.  And in the main compartment are carrots, farfalle pasta with vegan parmesan sprinkled on top, grape tomatoes on wing bento picks and a spinach angel on top.  In the bottom right corner is a Crimson Gold apple surrounded by purple sweet potato chips and in the bottom left corner are Field Grain veggie sausages with wing food picks.

For her snack today, Miss G has a Happy Tiffin brand stainless bento box filled with dried cranberries, medjool dates, sliced kiwi, and apple angel and whole cashews.

Miss 2 year old is back to school this week to with a LunchBots Quad stainless container.  From the top left she has dried cranberries, cashews, farfalle pasta with small Field grain Italian veggie sausage pieces and a slice of Field Grain sundried tomato angel on top.  In the bottom right compartment are pear angels and in the bottom left are honeydew angels.

I packed my husband his daily fruits and vegetables in his Easy LunchBoxes container to go with his leftovers for lunch (not shown).  He has raw walnuts, the negative cutout angel pieces of honeydew melon, mini carrots, medjool dates, an apple and a clementine.

Things I used to make this lunch:

One of my favorite things to do when I have a moment of spare time is to find local grocers with imported foods and dive in.  I have found some tiny grocers in my town hidden in small strip plazas and off the beaten path.  One of my favorites is a small Asian grocer.  I’ve discovered vegetable and fruits I’ve never seen, foods that aren’t normally available here and more importantly some inspiration to look at food a little differently.  A few weeks ago we tried Forbidden Rice which has a heavier feel to it and is black in color.  This time I found black rice pasta.   It looks jet black before it’s cooked and then it takes on a purplish hue once it’s cooked.  It’s gluten free, allergy friendly and makes the same old dishes more interesting.

Miss G has black rice pasta mixed with a bit of Earth Balance coconut spread.  I sauteed some Field Grain vegetable sausages to go with the pasta and made a face of it.  The “hair” is vegan parmesan, eyes and nose are roma and grape tomatoes and the sausage pieces are the mouth.  In the top left compartment are dried cherries and cashews and at the top right are black seedless grapes packed in her Easy LunchBoxes container.

In her Happy Tiffin stainless bento are purple sweet potato chips, pear slices, clementine orange sections and sliced kiwi for her preschool snack.

And my little Miss 2 year old has a LunchBots Quad.  From the top left are black seedless grapes, black rice pasta and Field Grain sausage, pear and clementine pieces and raspberries for lunch.

In a rush for fun lunches?  My go to is always the stash of cookie cutters.  These sandwiches are made from linzer cookie cutters which have interchangeable shapes in the middle.

As far as children go, they aren’t any different than adults.  They like their food to be pleasing to the eyes.  If it looks fun and colorful, they are more likely to try it and eat it!  Above is my 4 year old daughter’s lunch. The Rudi’s brand whole grain bread sandwiches are filled with almond butter & strawberry jam.  The cut out shapes came with my linzer cookie cutters.  Near the sandwiches are mini carrot pieces, cashews and dried cranberries.  At the top left are raspberries and the top right are d’anjou pear pieces packed in her Easy Lunchboxes container.

Miss G’s afternoon snack packed in her Happy Tiffin brand stainless container is Amande brand almond milk yogurt in the bottom with a Stretch Island fruit leather bird.  Above are more d’anjou pear pieces.  The birds on the outside look like honeydew melon.  I actually found a new melon at the local organic market this weekend called Piel De Sapo.  It looks like the shape of a honeydew with the skin of a watermelon.  It is a bit sweeter than honeydew & delicious!  I may go back & buy another one before they’re gone.

My 2 year old likes to have everything bite sized otherwise it ends up being picked over and left.  This morsel-sized lunch is packed in her LunchBots Quad stainless container.  Clockwise from the top left are piel de sapo melon flowers, d’anjou pear pieces, flower sandwiches are Rudi’s whole grain with almond butter & jam, and mango flowers.

My favorite part of packing lunches every day is knowing that there is no waste.  No disposable plastic bags as the silicone cups and Easy Lunchboxes compartments do the work for me.  I send the girls and my husband with cloth napkins and reusable napkins each day, and they all take their water bottles which can be refilled thoughout the day.

My husband has leftover dinner from last night.  I made the Engine 2 Diet’s plant based Sweet Potato Lasagna.  I think it looked prettier on the plate last night.

And below are the leftovers  with nectarines and carrot sticks packed to go for lunch at the office.

Back to school again today.  I feel like Sunday nights always sneak up and slap me in the face around 9pm when I realize all that I have to do for the following morning.  I wasn’t taking requests today so Miss G gets some square packages that I turned into a lunch “present”.  Her sandwiches are Justin’s Almond butter and strawberry whole fruit spread on Ezekiel Low Sodium bread.  I made my ribbon out of soy cheese and put a bow pick in the top to keep the two squares together.  At the top left is a pile of fresh blueberies from King Family Farm and Market that we visit weekly with a bunny pick and bunny baran (food separator) in the back for decoration.  At the top right are grape tomatoes and a blue monkey pick, and at the bottom right are watermelon squares packed in her Hello Kitty Sanrio bento box.

Miss A has the same sandwich on Ezekiel bread with Justin’s almond butter & fruit spread.  She has a pair of soy cheese shades and a fruit leather smile on her “cool” face today. To the left of the face is a small square of dried cherries and apricots.  At the top left are sliced pears with a pink bunny baran, the top right are watermelon squares and the bottom right is a small container of cashews packed in her pink Hello Kitty Sanrio bento box.  Both girls have ice water in their CamelBak kids bottles.

My husband is having black beans and rice with veggies not pictured here.  To go along with his main lunch, I packed him a salad of mixed baby greens.  On top are sliced baby cucumbers, red grape tomatoes and a mini sweet red pepper cut in half, seeded & shaped into hearts.  At the top right are heart shaped strawberries and at the bottom right are carrot & celery sticks packed in his Easy Lunch Box.

I’ve fallen off the posting wagon again.  We left town for over a week for Thanksgiving, and I didn’t make a single thing that was impressive last week.  Today is lunch at home.  Miss G requested a PB & honey on wheat so I made Rudolph with a Christmas cutter.  I used a Christmas sprinkle for his nose and a candy eye.  Served with a side of leftover Annie’s macaroni & cheese, snowflake shaped pears, blueberries and raspberries.  Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!
