It’s spring break week here in Florida so the girls are eating at home.  It’s incredibly warm here again too so it feels like spring too.  Miss G is definitely in a girly girl phase.  Everything must be princesses, pink, flowery and fancy.  I went with butterflies for today’s theme.  In the yellow butterfly cup is leftover cannellini bruschetta with rice vinegar, fresh basil from the garden, mini heirloom and grape tomatoes from the local market mixed with salt & pepper.  It’s great on bread but awesome without it too.  At top right on the plate are heart-shaped strawberries, below that is a small black plum cut into a butterfly shape with pick antennae.  Her sandwich is a whole grain bread butterfly with almond butter and agave nectar.  On top are peeled plum slices on the wings and another slice of black plum for the body and more colored picks for antennae.

Little A had a flower themed lunch today.   Since she turned 2 it’s pretty much anyone’s guess as to whether she’ll devour the whole lunch or smile and chuck it all on the floor.  Today she went with option C which was to push the food around on her plate a bit, make a pattern in the applesauce and then proclaim that she’s “all done”.   I try.  Her sandwich is a whole grain flower with almond butter and agave with a blueberry on top and a snap pea crisp for the stem.  The yellow flower cup has cinnamon applesauce and a grape in it.  Below that are sections of black plum in a flower shape and next to that are a couple of strawberry flowers.

So this week is M week at the kids’ preschool.  Miss G is practicing writing her upper and lower case M, and both kids are learning about words and sounds that begin with M.  I decided to find something G loved with M so I chose Milli Measure from Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr.  She is made of whole wheat tortillas and fruit leather for her face & hair. Inside was faux turkey veggie slices and faux cheese.  I also added the M on her hat.  The pink sheep container is filled with sliced kiwi and next to it is a pick of pineapple slices and blueberries.  She also had a small container of corn chips and an ice water with her lunch.

Little A had a scalloped tortilla sandwich with the same faux turkey & cheese and a fruit leather dot on top.  Above that are snap pea crisps.  On the left are pineapple chunks and blueberries.  She also had an applesauce and ice water with her lunch.

So I think it’s nice to share failures, lazy weeks with little motivation and lunches that even a 3 year old can’t decipher.  I had great intentions of making a lovely mermaid for the 3 year old.  I used a cookie cutter I recently bought.   The sandwich part was fine.  I used carrot slices for the scales.  They look ok, but they wouldn’t stay on for anything.  The spaghetti hair was alright too.  The face was another thing.  With limited time in the morning, I am forced to live with my mistakes.  So she’s in a side pose, but there’s no nose.  I just couldn’t make this one look right so I’ve decided she’s a sleestak mermaid (just google sleestak, and you’ll see what I mean).  She just looks creepy.  Worse yet, my daughter thought it was a seal.   Below her are grape tomatoes and goldfish crackers.  She also had applesauce again, Lifeway Kefir and ice water with her lunch.

The 1 year old got more rolled up ham & cheese with snap pea crisps and craisins underneath.  On the right side were orange slices and watermelon flowers on top.  She too had an applesauce, Lifeway kefir and ice water.

Parenting Magazine published this a while back, but I save it as inspiration for new ideas.  Those of you who want to try things and need a great visual, this is great “how to” link for you!

I had not one piece of bread in the house today so it was a good day to improvise.  Luckily I keep a bag of Jolie Ravioli in the freezer.  I found these at Whole Foods.  The kids love them and they’re pretty healthy too.  These are cheese  & broccoli ravioli in awesome shapes (cars, bears, rockets, dinosaurs, hears and stars).  Little G also loves carrots with ranch dip, and today I made cherry flowers with some fun green pea looking crackers that my lovely friend P sent from the Asian market out in California along with the cute koala crackers.  Thanks, P!

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
