FunBites Santa by bentoriffic

A while back I put this Santa in the chimney lunch together for FunBites.   I used their CubeIt cutter and some Rudi’s Organic Whole Grain bread to make the mini sandwiches.  I used the crust bread scrap for the top of the chimney and some remaining bread for his face.  His eyes and nose are made with Stretch Island brand fruit leather.  I used some agave nectar and sprinkled some unsweetened coconut on his face for the beard.  His hat is a strawberry half and the top of his hat is a tiny piece of a vegan (dairy free) marshmallow.  Above the mini sandwiches are a cup of honeydew melon trees with a Santa cupcake pick and in the top right cup are strawberry stars with a candy cane food pick.

My 4 year old loves her sandwiches.  She has whole grain and pumpernickel puzzle pieces.  I used the The Lunch Punch puzzle piece cutters for this one.  I cut the bread first, fill the sandwiches and then reassemble the pieces.  To the left is a pick of grape tomatoes and dried apricots.  Above the sandwich are red seedless grapes.  In the top left compartment of her Easy LunchBoxes are heart shaped strawberries and the top right are apple pieces.  I soak the apples immediately in a bowl of cold water with a bit of lemon or lime juice to prevent browning.  I soaked these for about 10 minutes and then toweled dry and put in the lunchbox.

Things I used to make this lunch:

EYE love pasta!  I really do, and so do my kids.  What’s even better is that this stuff is homemade.  Not by me, but my local pasta place here in Sarasota, Florida, Peperonata Pasta.

They make all their pasta here in town, and it’s sold at Whole Foods stores all over the state.  I usually pick some up from the owners themselves at the local Sarasota or San Marco Plaza farmer’s markets on the weekend.  They make Vegan pasta that is incredible and loaded with healthy grains like quinoa, flax seed and millet.  There are never leftovers in our house!

Above is Peperonata’s tagliatelle vegan pasta topped with 2 eyeball rings and grape tomatoes.  Underneath the sliced  strawberries at the top are golden grapes packed in her Easy LunchBoxes.

For her snack this afternoon, Miss G had sliced apples and ants on a log (celery with SunButter and raisins on top).

So I spotted this glow-in-the-dark container at the store.  It was filled with Skittles.  Of course, I dumped the Skittles and filled it with trail mix.  The mouth twists open and shut.  I love this for raisins, seeds, etc to make healthy snacks fun.

My husband had a container of soup (not shown) and this fruity bento to go along with it.  At the top left are mango chunks, the top right is a clementine with Jack Skellington drawn on it.  My kids are still to young for movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, but I love it.   Who doesn’t love a good Tim Burton movie?  In the bottom compartment are green grapes, sliced dapple dandy pluots, and d’anjou pear sections packed in an Easy LunchBoxes container.

Things I used to make this lunch:

It’s finally cooling off here at night in Florida.  And by cooling off, I mean that it drops below 70 at night.  I grew up in the Midwest in Minnesota so I do have weeks where I really miss the cool weather, crunching of leaves under foot and the smell of fall in the air.   Hope you’re enjoying the fleeting cool weather and changing leaves wherever you are today.

Miss G, my 4 year old, has a Halloween lunch again today.  She wanted a plain hummus wrap but I snuck in some julienned cucumber strips in the middle.  I have these neat silicone bands that keep the wraps from coming unraveled while she’s eating.  I wouldn’t recommend these for any kids under 4 ,but she manages them well.   Another trick is to put the wrap in the freezer or fridge for about an hour before sending it off.  It will stay put longer this way.  In the main compartment with the wrap is a seckel pear, a couple of grape tomatoes and a date coconut ball on a skeleton pick.  At the top left are pumpkin shaped mango pieces with a spider ring and poison bottle pick.  At the top right of her Easy LunchBoxes container are some tiny golden grapes with a jack-o-lantern face of Stretch Island fruit leather on top of the silicone pumpkin cup.

For her snack today, Miss G, the 4 year old, had sliced strawberries and below is a mixture of dried cranberries, pistachios, caramel apple coated almonds and cashews.

One of my favorite things to draw on and create food art with this time of year are the mandarin oranges and clementines.  They’re perfect for little fingers and fun!  I just grab a Sharpie marker (they’re non-toxic) and color away.  You can also just put stickers on them if you’re not inclined to draw.  This one is in honor or my new bento friend Erin over at Feeling A Little Lunchy. She’s just a tad moustache obsessed, and who doesn’t love a cute handlebar moustache?  Bonjour! and Happy Halloween to you too!

Little Miss Picky Eater, the 2 year old, has a LunchBots Quad full of Halloween fun today.  This is the perfect bento box for wee ones, in my opinion.  Just enough space for variety, keeps foods separate and hopefully less food wasted.  From the top left are a clementine peeled, jack-o-lantern sandwiches with pumpkin butter, sliced strawberries, and golden grapes with a pumpkin shaped mango on top.

Welcome to Monday.  I’m off to a slow start today trying to tackle a big to-do list, and I’m late posting lunches!  Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.  Miss G was the only one in school last Friday so I’m posting her Friday lunch.

She had Soy Boy ravioli at the top left.  I sent vegan parmesan “cheese” not shown for her to sprinkle on her pasta.  At the top right are cantaloupe pieces with a jack-o-lantern pick in them.  And in the bottom container are sliced strawberries and grape tomatoes.

For her snacks Friday, she had black seedless grapes at the top and a develish clementine with horns.  At the bottom is a half of a grim reaper green apple surrounded by cashews, walnuts and raisins.

I grew up in an old house than I swore at the time was haunted.  Something was always creeking, there were always critters in the basement and it had those funky unexplainable smells and noises that could really freak a kid out.  Now that I’m older, I realized that the house was pretty cool despite the old factor.  But as a kid those things create vivid memories.

Luckily my girls (4 and 2) don’t scare too easily.  They think creepy is still pretty funny.  I made them both haunted house bentos today.  Above is Miss G’s Easy LunchBoxes container.  From the top left is a seckel pear and cantaloupe houses with a black cat pick. Below the cantaloupe is a peeled clementine with a black cat face ring, raspberries with a kiwi house on top, Rudi’s whole grain bread with pumpkin butter filling and more sliced kiwi.

For her snack today, my 4 year old has a Happy Tiffin bento packed with cashews in the round container and a haunted house apple in the middle surrounded by sliced strawberries.

Miss A has a LunchBots Quad packed her her mini version of the same.  From the top left are sliced strawberries and a cantaloupe haunted house on top, a clementine with a witch face ring ( my 4 year old said it was an eagle), in the bottom right compartment are mixed nuts, seeds and dried raisins and cranberries and the bottom left are Rudi’s whole grain pumpkin butter haunted house sandwiches.

Spiders!  These are the delicious kind.  I happen to like most spiders, but I know many people are creeped out by them.

Miss G’s lunch today is an almond butter sandwich (bottom left) on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  She has spider picks of grape tomatoes on either side and a homemade vegan cornbread muffin with raisin eyes.  At the top left are strawberries with a honeydew spider and a plastic spider ring for decoration.  At the top right are red seedless grapes with honeydew spiders on top packed in her Easy LunchBoxes container.

For her  snack, Miss G has a Happy Tiffin bento packed with a seckel pear and raspberries.  In the container is apricot soy yogurt with some spiders for fun.

I packed another snack for a longer day so Miss G also had watermelon cubes in her sistema container with a raw date treat with coconut sprinkled on it.  It reminded me of a tarantula.

Little Miss 2 year old had her LunchBots Quad with red grapes at the top left in the spider cup, raspberries and a strawberry, almond butter spider sandwiches at the bottom right and at the bottom left is a cup of dried cranberries and sprouted seasoned pumpkin seeds.
