My dad died last week.  Just as I was typing away about the things I was grateful for last week, I realize now that the small things, tiny things we think are so insignificant can sometimes be the most precious memories.  My dad was a gifted writer and storyteller.  He loved to write and shared that love with me.  My dad read my blog.  I think he appreciated that I was using my writing and creativity, making a hobby out of it and feeding my kids healthy food. I live 3400 miles from my family so I was not there for this holiday.  All my siblings were fortunate enough to be there.  He had been ill for a while, but it doesn’t make his passing any easier.   I did have the chance to talk to him to say hi, catch up for a minute and to tell him I loved him the day he died.  And for that I am truly grateful.  The conversation was nothing significant, but it is one I will always remember since it was our last.  Today, more than most, I am grateful for the time I had with my dad.  Life is fragile and fleeting so be sure to stop and appreciate all the gifts in your life, no matter how small they seem.

My 4 year old daughter had an Easy LunchBoxes container filled with angels.  From the top left are pear pieces and angel shaped pears.  In the top right compartment are honeydew angels.  And in the main compartment are carrots, farfalle pasta with vegan parmesan sprinkled on top, grape tomatoes on wing bento picks and a spinach angel on top.  In the bottom right corner is a Crimson Gold apple surrounded by purple sweet potato chips and in the bottom left corner are Field Grain veggie sausages with wing food picks.

For her snack today, Miss G has a Happy Tiffin brand stainless bento box filled with dried cranberries, medjool dates, sliced kiwi, and apple angel and whole cashews.

Miss 2 year old is back to school this week to with a LunchBots Quad stainless container.  From the top left she has dried cranberries, cashews, farfalle pasta with small Field grain Italian veggie sausage pieces and a slice of Field Grain sundried tomato angel on top.  In the bottom right compartment are pear angels and in the bottom left are honeydew angels.

I packed my husband his daily fruits and vegetables in his Easy LunchBoxes container to go with his leftovers for lunch (not shown).  He has raw walnuts, the negative cutout angel pieces of honeydew melon, mini carrots, medjool dates, an apple and a clementine.

It’s that time again to pop on through the awesomeness that my gal pal bento bloggers created for the 2012 Summer Olympic games in London.  Anything goes with this group so it surely won’t disappoint!

I wanted to do something a little different so I decided to check out the photos of Olympic shots in London.  I found that they had hung the Olympic rings underneath the top tier of the London Bridge.  That’s what I decided on.  Not very Olympic, but something I would love to see as a tourist.  Of course this is a terribly simplified version, but hopefully you get the point. The sides are made from Rudi’s Whole Grain bread, and the bridge crossings are the crust and heel of the bread.  The small white decorations are Vegan brand cheese.  The Olympic rings under the bridge and the LONDON are made from Stretch Island Fruit Leather.  At the top left are watermelon Olypmpic rings and at the top right are crinkle cut cantaloupe pieces and an Olympic wreath made from rosemary from the garden instead of olive branches.

I also made a sad attempt at making the foot of Hermes.  He was an ancient Greek god of the athletes and an Olympian.  His symbol of the winged foot is known now to represent track, running, athleticism among many other things.  He was also the personal assistant and herald to Zeus, king of the gods.

This didn’t really turn out like I wanted, but sometimes that’s the way it goes and I ran out of time for a remake.  I hand cut the foot, wing, and fruit leather sandal.  Small pieces of Vegan brand cheese are the detail on the wing.  The columns on the sides are baby zucchini cut in half. I used black olive slices for the Olympic rings.  At the top left are organic red seedless grapes and cantaloupe discus at the top right both with winged picks for decoration.  Both lunches are packed in my Easy Lunch Boxes.

My littlest cherub asked for an angel lunch today so I pulled out the Christmas cutters in June.  This one was done quickly so not a lot of detail, but she enjoyed it.  She has a vegan deli slice and vegan cheese on Rudi’s whole grain bread.  Next to the sandwich is a Late July brand organic chocolate cookie with a dried apricot angel on top.  The top half of her LunchBots Duo box is (clockwise) blueberries, cantaloupe, and in the flower cup watermelon with a honeydew angel on top.

Miss G couldn’t make up her mind so I made her a tulip lunch.  Hers has the same vegan deli slice with vegan cheese on Rudi’s Whole Grain bread.  To the right are plum sections in the orange flower cup.  At the top left are picks of blueberries, honeydew melon circles in the pink flower cup and a Late July organic chocolate cookie with dried apricots tulips on top.

Bentoriffic One Year Giveaway

Miss G adores Tinkerbell and anything fairy so I created my own lunch fairy today for her. I used a circle cutter for the face, the body is a leftover bagel piece cut into an upside down V for the legs.  I have a dragonfly cookie cutter that I used to cut the wings with the other leftover bagel pieces.  I coated the wings with honey and sprinkled them with green decorator sprinkles.  Her face is cur from fruit leather, ovals for the eyes, small pieces for the eyelashes and mouth and a yogurt covered raisin cut in half and stuck on the fruit leather with honey for the center of her eyes.  The hair is dried apricots cut with a small pea pod cutter for the orange waves.  She is standing on a section of plum for a surfboard and surrounded by green seedless grapes.  Also in the lunch was a pouch of apple/peach sauce and a berry flavored Lifeway Kefir.    Have a great week back to school everyone!
