Mom’s had her hands in the Play Doh collection again.  I found a mini Cinderella crown cutter in the Play Doh stash so I’ve scoured it off and I’m using it for lunches now.  Miss G has a princess sandwich today cut with a LunchPunch sandwich cutter.  She has yellow and red grape tomatoes surrounding the sandwich.  At the top left are crown shaped cantaloupe pieces with a princess wand pick and at the top right are kiwi slices with a tiara on top packed in her Easy LunchBoxes container.

For her snack today, my 4 year old has a Happy Tiffin stainless bento filled with sliced mangos, a peeled clementine, 2 Crimson Gold tiny apples and whole cashews.

My 2 year old had leftovers from last night.  She had plums, carambola (star fruit) spaghetti squash with marinara sauce topped with dairy free parmesan and pineapple chunks packed in her LunchBots Quad stainless lunch container.

Happy lunch packing!

Things I used to make this lunch:

My kids love Play Doh.  I really hate the mess it leaves.  What I DO love is the Play Doh cutters.  As a bento lunch freak, I look at everything as an idea for a lunch.  I have used Play Doh and play kitchen cutters (well washed, of course) to cut kid foods before.  I used a cookie cutter this sandwich to make the princess crown.  The sandwich is Justin’s Almond Butter & Jam on Rudi’s whole grain bread.  I also stuck a few candy hearts on the crown for the jewels with almond butter.  At the top left are kiwi flowers and the top right are watermelon shoes and magic mirrors for my little princess.

This time of year seems to drain many of us having to buy new shoes, school supplies, uniforms, tuition and just paying for growing kids in general.  Cristi from BentOnBetterLunches did a great post on how to make budget bentos.  She is a mom of 5, and has such a wonderful eye for organization, fresh ideas and keeping kids well fed.  I love that she finds use out of every day items like Play Doh cutters, paper muffin cups and rubberbands that make great bento items.  Her post here on Budget Bento by BentOnBetterLunches can help give you some creative ideas for lunches without spending a penny!  Thanks for the inspiration, Cristi.

Little Miss A, my 2 year old, is having mini square sandwiches.  She has been licking the filling off of the bigger sandwiches I made for her and leaving the bread.  When I switched to something more bite sized, she seems to pop the whole thing in her mouth.  I used the FunBites Cube It cutter to cut the bread and then filled the sandwiches.  In the middle is a silicone heart shaped container with seasoned pumpkin seeds.  The sandwiches are surrounded by dried cranberries.  At the top left are raspberries with a kiwi heart on top and at the top right are watermelon flowers.  The lunch is packed in a LunchBots Duo stainless container.

Chevrons have resurfaced in design, fashion and now I’m putting them into my food.  I love them.  The bright colored Vs in this salad are all different colored sweet peppers.  Underneath the salad is baby spinach and around the salad are cucumber flowers packed in an Easy LunchBox.  At the top left are carrot & celery sticks and at the top right are fresh nectarine slices & raspberries.

The girls love Hello Kitty so I decided to do one more for fun.  Please visit the Bento Blog Network.  My bentos are #s 20 and #23.  Stop over there and check out all the awesome lunches people made, and you can vote for your favorites!

It’s still Q week at school so I decided to make her Queen Hello Kitty.  She’s made on whole wheat bread quished a bit with a rolling pin.  I used a LunchPunch for the crown but the cat and her bow are both cut by hand.  The jewels on the crown are edible Easter confetti made of potato starch.  I stuck everything on today with almond butter.  She has prune ovals for eyes, a dried cranberry for her nose and fruit leather strips for her whiskers.  Her wand is a pretzel stick with a gummy heart.  I try to make it a rule to not put candy or sweets in her bento any more, but I made an exception with this one leftover from her Valentine candy.  On the top right are raspberries and strawberries with a Q pick in them and below that is a Hello Kitty Easter container with walnuts, almonds and raisins in it.

Little A has Q week too at school.  She gets a simple queen with an oval face, candy eyes, dried apricot crown and a dried cranberry mouth. In her Hello Kitty container are raisins, dried apricot and mango pieces.  At the top right is a sliced strawberry and raspberries with a crown pick and walnuts in the kitty container below.

Today is a typical Monday.   I had the best intentions and resorted to my handy dandy Lunch Punch for the frog prince today.   You can find all their great sandwich cutters here: http://www.thelunchpunch.com/lp/.  They’re also sold on Amazon.  The crown, eyes and smile are just punched out of strawberry fruit leather and stuck on the sandwich with honey.  I gave him some green frog warts made of chocolate decorative sprinkles.  I used colorful separators so the fruit didn’t make the sandwich mushy.  I included organic raspberries, a big strawberry and blueberries.

I didn’t want my husband to feel left out so he got a special message on his sandwich today too!  Happy Monday.

Today was a lazy lunch at home. Used the crown/heart LunchPunch cutter for the sandwich. Carrot sticks, ranch dip, clover shaped pear, grape flower & green bean chip for the stem.
